Ten (10) Area High Schools are invited to send their three (3) best artists to compete for the Sean Wallace Encouraging Art Award.

Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week of Kentucky

MED Week celebrates the success and contributions of minority-owned businesses and those “like you” that support minority enterprise development.

MED Week was founded in 1983 by President Reagan and first proclaimed by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear in 2012, naming MEDI as the Commonwealth’s official state host. President Reagan encouraged all Americans to observe MED Week. MEDI encourages this community and all Kentuckians to take this time to recognize and appreciate minority Americans determination pursuing social and economic mobility.

MED Week Goals:

• To highlight successful economic development strategies in Kentucky’s rural and metropolitan cities and counties that improve the qualities of life and place for minorities residents and all such as; leadership, supplier diversity programs, micro-loan programs, lower bond capacity thresholds, certification programs, spending goals, mentorship programs, trainings and workshops;

• To recognize and celebrate the contributions and advancements of minority owned businesses and those that support minority enterprise development in Kentucky;

• To advocate policies, programs, solutions, initiatives and best practices that improve opportunities for Kentucky minority entrepreneurs and workforce development;

• To raise funds to support the technical and financial assistance provided that results in minority economic enterprise development throughout Kentucky.

Eye Opener Breakfast: Salute to Agriculture

The Christian County Agri-Business Association, in conjunction with the Christian County Chamber of Commerce, invite you to join us for the 2019 Salute to Agriculture Breakfast where we will hear from Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles on the current trends, issues and successes pertaining to agriculture.

Awards will be presented to the Farmer of the Year, Ag Business of the Year and Friend of Agriculture.

Hopkinsville Decorations Contest

The Hopkinsville Beautification Commission’s Annual Holiday Decorations Contest is now open for members of the community. The commission will accept nominations for Best Decorated Residence and Best Decorated Business until Monday, December 3rd, 2018 at 4:00 P.M. Decisions will be made on the 3rd at the Hopkinsville Beautification Commission Meeting. Members of the community can enter by calling Public Works at 270-890-0600 and asking for the Beautification Coordinator Heather Braun, entering at the Hopkinsville Beautification Webpage, or on the Hopkinsville Beautification Commission Facebook page. Awards will be presented after the parade at the Farmers Market pavilion on the 8th of December. Winners will also receive recognition on the Hopkinsville Beautification Commission webpage and Facebook page, will be recognized in the Kentucky New Era, and featured on the Hopkinsville Transit bus tour after the awards. The bus tour will be first come, first serve this year, and riders will be meeting the buses on Bethel in front of the library book drop.

Hopkinsville-Christian County Branch NAACP Annual Awards And Freedom Fund Banquet

The Hopkinsville/Christian County Branch of the NAACP announces their Annual Freedom Fund and Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at the Pioneers Complex, located at 904 North Main Street, Hopkinsville, KY.

The Freedom Fund Banquet is an annual fundraiser endorsed by the National NAACP held to support each local branch. The fundraiser helps the local branch effect change in our community by assisting those who are disenfranchised and offering support to the youth in our community. Our efforts in the past have offered underserved youth the scholarship opportunities that assisted in bridging economic achievement gaps.

We are pleased to announce our speaker is Dr. Raymond Malcolm Burse who is a graduate of Christian County High School-Hopkinsville, KY; Oxford University-Oxford England; and Harvard Law School. He is the past President of Kentucky State University and is currently the General Counsel for the NAACP of Kentucky.

The exhibit will feature works in the following categories:  Drawing with pencil, charcoal, ink,  and pastels; Painting using oil, acrylic, watercolor and encaustic; Mixed Media using collage, montage, or experimental; Photography; and 3-D including jewelry, woodturning, textiles, baskets, pottery, and sculpture.

New this year will be a “People’s Choice Award”.  We hope visitors to the exhibit will select their favorite piece of art and cast a vote for it.

Also there will be a special “Daedalus Award” this year given to an emerging young artist under age 25 who demonstrates technical and esthetic innovation.

Cash awards will be presented to winning artists during an awards reception on Sunday, October 28, from 2:00 – 3:00 at the HCC Auditorium Gallery.  The public is invited.
