The Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County is thrilled to invite our community to celebrate and send-off nine Christian County Public School students who will be competing in National History Day.
Under the direction and leadership of Shannon Slate and Lea Brumfield, close to 30 local students developed projects to compete in National History Day. Of these, two student groups advanced from the regional and state competitions to earn a place at the national level. Christian County High School students Timothy Hanley, Lacey Stewart, and NaShiaya Wilson will compete in the senior group performance division with a piece on the women’s suffrage movement. Hopkinsville High School students Makiyah Alston and Amira Trotter will compete with an exhibit they created about Hopkinsville’s own bell hooks. The groups will present their projects at the national competition in Washington, D.C. from June 12-14.
National History Day is a nonprofit education organization dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of history. Each year, students across the country develop projects based on a theme and create essays, performances, and exhibits to illustrate the theme. “Frontiers in History: People, Places, Idea” served as the theme for 2023.
